Defining yourself

Slowly building out my profile. Interesting process this, really examining yourself and your interests/favorites/etc. I find the older I get, the more sharply defined they get. I can more specifically tell you what my favorites books were from my high school years now than I could have, say, 5 years ago.

The downside of this, I would think, might be that ossification of personality that happens as people grow older. Lord, I hope that is not what is happening here. I'd like to keep a certain elasticity in my outlook on life.

Who's a quiet John Cusack fan on the sly then?
It is difficult to describe oneself in a few choice interests or cultural releases isn't it? I like the tiny details in nature such as bees disappearing inside foxgloves and the uber cool amplified buzz you get when they do. I like walking the hills and discovering ruined sheepfolds. I also love The Culture in Iain M Banks books - especially the ship names ( http://qntm.org/culture ), but try telling anyone this in real life and their eyes glaze over.

Yes, I agree completely. It's hard to convey the thrill I get when I discover that there was a golden age masked man named The Green Lama who was a practicing Buddhist in a 1930's comic book, or the fading beauty that is translated by watching a single drop of condensation roll down a stainless steel mug, alight on a napkin and then slowly be absorbed.

There's a poetry in small things and a wisdom in the arcane and obscure that most people are traveling too quickly through this world to fully appreciate.

I personally love to hear about those kinds of things. If someone, like you for example, mentions Iain M Banks, I usually take the time out to investigate and try and key into those tings that they think are important in their lives.

It enriches both ways.

Geez, this could have been a blog entry in and of itself.

I highly recommend The Player of Games as a starting point.

Really - a buddhist comic book character? I guess Superman is jewish so it figures!

Knock on the sky and listen to the sound.
